If you're looking for something fun to do, August brings several exciting events to the city:
Austin Ice Cream Festival (August 12)
Don't miss the 11th annual Austin Ice Cream Festival. It's the coolest event in town, and visitors can enjoy an array of flavors from local, regional, and national brands as they explore Fiesta Gardens. The festival also includes a rock climbing wall, yard games, and musical guests such as Susanna Choffel.
Bat Fest (August 19)
Head to the Congress Avenue Bridge from 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., to watch as the world's largest bat colony (1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats) take to the skies for their nightly flight around town. Called a "Top Small Town Event" by Flipkey, it also features a costume contest and musical performers such as The Rankin Twins, Blue Water Highway, and Paul Wall. It's hard to predict what time the bats will leave their home, but they usually exit between 7:00 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.
The Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival (August 20)
The Hot Sauce Festival began from humble beginnings in 1990 and is now the largest competition of its type as it draws more than ten thousand visitors and over 350 entries every year. While sampling hot sauces from across the state, enjoy live music by Mike and the Moonpies, Carson McHone, Alesia Lani, and more. Food vendors will also be on hand such as Garbo's Lobster Truck and Buenos Aires Cafe.
