Austin has a great vegetarian and vegan dining scene, and there are some great options within a short trip from Sur512.
Bouldin Creek Cafe (1900 South 1st Street) Look for the sign with the coffee-wielding cartoon frog and you'll know you're in the right place. Bouldin Creek Cafe offers a menu of American diner classics in both vegan and vegetarian varieties. What can you expect on the menu? Sandwiches, burgers, scrambles, salads, tacos and spaghetti, just for starters. They're open for all three meals every day, and stay open until midnight every night for a late nosh.
Unity Vegan Kitchen (415 Jessie Street) Unity is a stationary food truck with plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy in the good weather. The menu is completely vegan, and they're open for lunch and dinner Sunday through Thursday. Expect a variety of comfort foods such as mac & cheese, corn dogs, curly fries, chicken and waffles, sesame chicken and meatball sandwiches -- all entirely free of animal products, of course.
True Food Kitchen (222 West Ave.) True Food is an expanding national chain that focuses on meals made from anti-inflammatory ingredients. They do have meat on the menu, but each dish is clearly marked as to whether it is vegetarian or vegan, and there is a very strong veggie-only menu. It's a great spot for anything from brunch to dinner; menu highlights include quinoa burgers, veggie flatbread pizza and the ancient grains bowl.
Counter Culture (2337 East Cesar Chavez Street) Once a food trailer, Counter Culture has expanded to a full-fledged restaurant location. The menu is completely vegan, raw and made from scratch. It's basically deli or coffee shop style with an emphasis on breakfast items, brunch, sandwiches and salads, but there's a few oddities like pad thai and quinoa curry.
