Sometimes, places are very identified with a particular sport. When you think of hockey, for example, you think of Canada. Well, rodeo is like that in Texas. You can enjoy Rodeo Austin, one of the biggest rodeos and livestock shows in the state, from March 12 to 26.
Over the years, Rodeo Austin has expanded from its 1938 origins, when it was a stock exhibition with 16 animals into one of Austin’s largest events, featuring top 10 ProRodeo competitions, music on several stages every day, and a fair with carnival rides. The rodeo lives to advertise itself as “where weird meets western.”
Want to see rodeo events? Take your pick from bareback riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, team roping, bull riding, and bullfighting. An Austin favorite is mutton busting, in which young cowboys and cowgirls ride a sheep for 6 seconds. Austin’s rodeo also features world-class rodeo clowns.
There are 15 different livestock and horse shows, with dairy cattle, breed livestock, and quarter horse and paint horse competitions.
Love the Ferris wheel, roller coasters, and cotton candy? You can find that at Rodeo Austin too.
Finally, there is music, music, music. In total, Rodeo Austin will host 130 live music performances on several stages, in which American music legends alternate with today’s indie and punk.
Country music icon Willie Nelson will perform, as well Motown icon Smokey Robinson. Also on tap: country music’s The Mavericks, Gary Allan, Tanya Tucker, and Josh Turner. Local faves All Hat No Cadillac and the South Austin Moonlighters are among the indie bands performing.
