Austin's Infamous SXSW

It’s not too early to start thinking about one of Austin’s most famous festivals - the annual South by Southwest Music and Media Festival, also known as SXSW. Not only is it big and wonderful, but in 2016, SWSX will be 30! It happens every March, and it’s three big, bright and bold festivals in one: one for music, one for film, and one for interactive media.

Interested in music? The SXSW Music Festival will be held March 15 to 20 this year. There will be multiple stages to catch everything your eardrums can handle. In addition, SWSX is a conference, with speakers discussing the state of their industry and their art. Past speakers have included Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg, and Chrissie Hynde.

Conferences are arranged by track, with some focusing on the business of music (copyright and marketing, for example) and some on the intersection of art and business (submitting a demo).

Interested in film? The SXSW Film Festival will be held March 11 to 19. This festival focuses on the art and the business of film and how the two fuse together to bring us great film. This year, Austin’s Richard Linklater will be previewing his latest film, Everybody Wants Some. Speakers will include Jake Gyllenhaal and Mr. Robot.

Interested in interactive media? This part of SWSX will be happening March 11 to 15. Like the other two segments, the Interactive Media Festival features both roll-outs (previews of games, websites, and more) and panels of industry players who will discuss trends and start-ups.
